The Accountant 2 is Officially Coming

Ben Affleck is one of the most underrated actors of our generation and thus his 2016 mystery crime thriller The Accountant is perhaps one of the most underappreciated movies of the last decade. Directed by Gavin O’ Connor, The Accountant followed Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, an autistic soldier turned accountant who leads a double life hunting down criminals. The film featured an array of stellar supporting stars alongside Affleck including J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, and Anna Kendrick. It was more of a mystery with a heavy focus on character than a mindless action picture and took the time to accurately depict autism realistically as researched by Ben Affleck in preparation for the role. And now 5 years later the director Gavin O’Connor in a recent interview with CinemaBlend has announced that The Accountant 2 is coming and quite possibly The Accountant 3 thereafter to complete the trilogy in a Rain Man-esque style.

Gavin had the following to say:

“There will not be a Way Back sequel, but we are doing an Accountant sequel. We literally just closed that deal. We’re doing The Accountant again...I've always wanted to do three because what, the second one's going to be more with -- we're going to integrate his brother into the story. So there'll be more screen time for Bernthal in the second one. And then the third movie’s going to be, I call it, ‘Rain Man on steroids.’ The third movie is going to be the two brothers, this odd couple. The third one is going be a buddy picture.”

This news is incredibly exciting as seeing Ben Affleck and Gavin O’Connor re-team following their work on the first The Accountant film and The Way Back is a prospect with a lot of potential and rich storytelling possibilities within Christian Wolff’s world. At the time of the film’s release, many called it a Batman film in disguise as the main character holds a lot of similarities to The Dark Knight with his war on crime offset with his case of dual identities. In addition, many principal members of the cast belonged to that world including J.K. Simmons who had been set to appear in Ben Affleck’s then-in-development The Batman which he was to write, direct, and star in as J.K. Simmons who was to play Gordon in The Batman and here played a Treasury Agent who had set out to arrest him but years ago decided the vigilante was on the right side of the law. Cynthia Addai-Robinson played the Treasury Agent’s Successor and in the Arrowverse she played Amanda Waller but in The Accountant, as the new agent on the beat, she was intent on taking down Wolff in pursuit of the law however she came to realize things weren’t as black-and-white as they seemed. Of Course Jon Bernthal, famous for playing the Punisher on Netflix played Brax, one of the villains of the film who was revealed to be Wolff’s brother who had been introduced via flashbacks.

The two brothers, even Ben Affleck’s character despite his autistic struggles were put through grueling training by their military father to be the toughest they could possibly be and the results speak for themselves in the third act of the film when the two brothers engage in action side by side. In addition to their impressive skillsets though a deep bond is showcased between the two of them which will be explored further in-depth in the sequels as Gavin O’Connor describes a Rain Man-inspired tone in buddy cop storytelling. This is intriguing for sure and tells me to expect not only more action and mystery in these sequels but more of the character-focused drama the first film brought and a progression of the character arcs of Ben Affleck’s lethal and dangerous autistic assassin and his brother as they delve into the relationship between the two brothers in the same vein as the stellar 1988 Tom Cruise drama.

The Accountant 2 is probably at least 2 or 3 years off as no details are out yet about whether the scripts are finished yet and more casting is sure to come in addition to Affleck and with a packed movie slate in the future it’ll probably be 2023 or 2024 at the earliest before we see The Accountant 2 in cinemas. In the meantime I highly recommend you check out The Way Back also directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Ben Affleck as it is a phenomenal drama that parallels the real-life alcoholism struggles of Ben Affleck with great sincerity, realism, and inspirational integrity. And if you haven't seen the Tom Cruise classic Rain Man yet, what are you waiting for?
