3 Reasons to Look Forward to the Friends Reunion

"I'll be there for you," is burned into the memories of millions of Friends fans across the globe and in the coming months for the first time since Friends went off the air in 2004 the show will return in the form of an unscripted reunion. Originally a Friends reunion was supposed to premiere last May but COVID struck ensuing a whole host of delays. The cast and creators behind the show were insistent on not doing a Zoom based reunion but instead preserving their original vision for a reunion recorded in front of a live studio audience on the set of Friends. Now with the pandemic drawing to a close the reunion will supposedly be filming in March and here is my list of 3 reasons to look forward to the reunion.

The Cast
We all know the number one reason we will be tuning in to watch the Friends reunion and that is because of the cast. From 1994 to 2004 the six stars of the sitcom thrived in their roles and their collective chemistry on screen was magnetic. They managed to capture lightning in a bottle and were able to convince audiences that they were friends who would want to spend time together and who you would want to spend time with and more than that the cast of Friends became a family in real life as well. When the Friends reunion comes to fruition the cast will be able to bring that chemistry to the stage and recapture that excitement of catching up with them. Not only will they be able to reminisce about old times from the show but they will be able to comment on their present day lives and potentially even speculate on what their characters would be up to today.

Nostalgia
Doubtless one of the chief reasons so many people still watch reruns of Friends today is to embrace nostalgia. Whether that's the nostalgia of the 90s when people didn’t have a smartphone in their hands constantly or the nostalgia of remembering what it was like when they were at that age of twenty-something people like to be remembered of what came before and the reunion is sure to do that in spades. Clips from the show are all but guaranteed to be showcased but I’m sure it won’t just be a one hour clip show and the reunion will feature plenty of the cast reflecting on old times from the show and behind the scenes stories that never made it in front of the camera. Their is also a whole new generation of Friends fans though that never saw the show in its original run and discovered it recently on Netflix and those are the types of fans who are no doubt hoping to live the sort of adventurous lives that the Friends characters lived in those stories that were all about six young twenty-somethings trying to make it in the Big Apple and seeing the ensemble in their 50s still able to keep the energy of the show alive in younger and older fans minds alike is sure to be a prominent highlight of the group’s return. Matthew Perry is bound to have a couple tricks up his sleeve with his witty repertoire that is inherent to his real life personality and the dynamic voices of Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, and Courtney Cox are all ready to bring that nostalgia back into people’s livings rooms. Jennifer Aniston has probably had the most prolific career since the series finale of Friends but all the stars have had success in one way or another but the legacy of the show lives on through each of them regardless and seeing them all together again for the first time in 17 years will be spectacular. In real life sometime recently before the pandemic struck they actually all got together for a dinner and posted a photo of themselves on social media setting the internet ablaze proving they haven’t lost relevancy or chemistry together.

Fun Skits
I don’t know if this is going to happen for sure but I’m sure the reunion which is unscripted will have plenty of surprises up its sleeves besides just being an hour of clips from the show. The cast will for sure sit around in those famous sets including Central Perk and their apartments and reminisce about old times and behind the scenes anecdotes but I think there is strong reason to believe that the cast and creators will want to have some fun with the fans especially since their holding off filming this reunion so they can do it in front of a live studio recorded audience. What if the cast reenacts old scenes from the show? Can you imagine Matthew Perry doing a scene where he has to say, “Could I be more...”, or Matt Leblanc saying, “How you doin,” or David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston reenacting a breakup scene between Ross and Rachel where Ross insists, “We were on a break!”, much to Rachel’s chagrin. There are a lot of fun classic scenes that could be reenacted especially with the whole ensemble as a collective group including The Thanksgiving scene where everybody has to eat Rachel’s pie that she messes up much to everybody’s displeasure except Joey. Beyond old scenes from the show it is a for sure thing that countless scenes were left on the cutting room floor and that old material could be brought to life through the performers on stage with the surging energy of the live studio audience’s enthusiasm. And one of the benefits of the cast doing the reunion in front of an audience versus over Zoom is that they could reenact scenes that utilized a lot of physical comedy on the show. One scene in particular that comes to mind is the scene where Ross and his son Ben scare Rachel by tricking her into thinking Ben knocked Ross down the stairs by using a dummy. And there are countless other scenes where the performers run around on stage in the apartments or even the classic Thanksgiving episode, “The one with the Football”, where the gang all plays a timeless game of football that is one for the ages.

Conclusion
In conclusion the long-delayed Friends reunion has a lot of potential and there are a lot of reasons to look forward to its eventual debut. The cast of Friends has electric chemistry and even though almost two decades have passed since the show went off the air, chemistry between onscreen and off-screen friends like that doesn’t just dissipate into thin air. The reunion has the potential to be a lot of fun with the inclusion of nostalgia and creative stunts planned by the cast and creators of the show. And who knows perhaps this Friends reunion will be the first of many to come in the future being the television equivalent of family reunions in a way?
