Chris Pine to Write, Produce, Star in & Direct Poolman

Chris Pine is about to boldly go where he has never gone before as according to Deadline, Pine is set to make his directorial debut with his latest project Poolman, a noir mystery-comedy which will see Pine co-star alongside Annette Being and Danny DeVito. AGC Studios is launching sales on the film and Pine is expected to give a presentation to buyers this week as he re-teams with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins to produce with him in addition to Stacy Sher and Ian Gotler.

Per Deadline the official synopsis for Poolman is as follows:

“In the movie, Pine will play Darren Barrenman, a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny Los Angeles and crashing city council meetings with his neighbors Jack and Diane (DeVito, Bening). When Barrenman uncovers the greatest water heist in LA history since Chinatown he makes uneasy alliances with a beautiful and connected femme fatale while following every lead he can with corrupt city officials, burned out Hollywood types, and mysterious benefactors – all in the name of protecting his precious Los Angeles. Expect some fun cameos and supporting cast to be added.”

Poolman is being pitched as “Big Lebowski meets LA film noir with a healthy splash of La La Land”, and is thus being positioned as one of the hottest projects at the upcoming virtual EFM. Pine has co-scripted the film with Gotler and June 2022 is being eyed as a start date for rolling cameras.

Pine is a phenomenal actor with a great deal of range who is best known for his roles as Captain Kirk in the J.J. Abrams-era Star Trek films and as Steve Trevor in Patty Jenkins’s Wonder Woman films. However he has also had starring and leading roles in films such as The Finest Hours (2016), This Means War (2012), Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement (2004), Unstoppable (2010), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), and Hell or High Water (2016). Having fully proved himself as a versatile actor capable of portraying both comedic and dramatic sensibilities, Poolman seems like a great vehicle for Pine to launch his directorial career with.

Pine will also be seen in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie coming next year and is set to star alongside Hell or High Water co-star Ben Foster and 24 star Kiefer Sutherland in the thriller, The Contractor. His future in the Star Trek franchise however remains uncertain even with the upcoming Star Trek 4 to be helmed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman. However one can only hope that when Pine does return as Kirk it will be so in a film that will deliver on what made Star Trek (2009) work but also capture the essence of the TOS. In the meantime I’m certainly looking forward to what Pine delivers with Poolman, a project that seems to be bursting with ambition and potential.
