Antonio Banderas Joins Indiana Jones 5

It looks like Zorro will be fighting alongside Indy or should I say against him as Antonio Banderas has officially joined the cast of Indiana Jones 5 in a mystery role. Deadline reports that Banderas will co-star alongside Harrison Ford, Phoebe-Waller Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, and Shaunette Renee Wilson. Filming is already well underway for the film which recently saw its shooting schedule reconfigured a few weeks ago due to Ford injuring his shoulder during a fight scene rehearsal but he is reportedly well on the mend and may very well be back on set shooting already.

Steven Spielberg is taking a step back from directing duties for the fifth installment with James Mangold (Kate & Leopold, Ford V. Ferrari) taking the reins with Spielberg still very much involved in a producer capacity. Recently Mangold spoke out against online critics who questioned his ability to deliver a quality Indiana Jones movie in the spirit of the original trilogy:

"I don't know if I'll make you happy but my team and I will knock ourselves out trying to make something good. "We admire the craft of the originals. I hope when you see real images, they'll look better to you than paparazzi shots from bushes. He added: "Maybe, just maybe, I won't let you down. I cherish old Hollywood pictures. Give me a little air to make the film. Then make your judgments, okay?"

Antonio Banderas is certainly a great choice to join the Indiana Jones franchise as his time as Zorro in The Mask of Zorro (1998) and its sequel The Legend of Zorro (2005) proved him to be a classic action hero with style and charisma and a sincere sense of vulnerability to him that makes him all the more human making him the perfect co-star for everyman Harrison Ford. Banderas has played plenty of roles besides Zorro of course and his extensive range of roles have included his recent work in The Hitman’s Wife Bodyguard, Sony’s upcoming film Uncharted starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, among other projects in development. To those who may wonder if Banderas is too old to do an action film he's only 60 compared to Ford’s nearly 80 years of age so Banderas is more than up for the job as he is as youthful in spirit and body as Ford is and the role Banderas is playing opposite Ford is anyone's guess as he could be anyone from the local bartender who aids the famed archeologist on an expedition of his or Mads Mikkelsen’s dangerous enforcer set out to stop Indy from interfering with the villain’s plans.

Recent set photos hinted that Indiana Jones 5 will be set in London in 1969 for at least a portion of the film and it certainly is shaping up to be a high-caliber theatrical experience that evokes adventure, scale, humor, possibly romance, and plenty of action for sure. And let's not forget that John Williams, the composer behind the iconic score of the series for the last 40 years, will be returning as usual. Indiana Jones 5 is set to debut in theaters July 29, 2022.
