Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Announces New Movie “Red One” Pitching it as “Hobbs meets Miracle on 34th Street”

Who doesn’t like a good Christmas movie and for that matter who doesn’t like a good action-adventure movie? Well, apparently we’ll be getting a bit of both as according to Deadline Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson along with Seven Bucks Productions are producing a four-quadrant action-adventure Christmas movie entitled “Red One” set for release on Amazon in 2023. The Rock even took time out from his workout session to get on Instagram to announce the project to his fans to the tune of Christmas music in the background to share his enthusiasm for “Red One” which he pitches the concept as essentially “Hobbs meets Miracle on 34th Street”.

Now Hobbs is of course in reference to his Fast and Furious character, a character The Rock has been playing on the big screen ever since Fast Five. In fact, he even went on to share with his fans that the screenwriter of Fast Five and furthermore Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, and Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw will be penning the script for “Red One”. This bodes well for the film as Fast Five is my favorite of the Fast & Furious movies I have seen so far (I’m 3 movies behind) and Morgan’s frequent collaboration with the Rock will no doubt be an advantage in the making of this motion picture. As for the mix of tones between Fast and Furious and Miracle on 34th Street, this is clearly going to be an action-adventure comedy set at Christmas time perhaps in the vein of Die Hard with a bit of a family-friendly twist to it as the Rock does describe the film as a four-quadrant movie. This will be a straight-to-Amazon movie with Amazon winning the rights to steam it in an intense bidding war and according to Variety, Amazon has ambitious plans to use the tentpole film to synergistically cross-promotionalize its e-commerce business. However, this story concept which comes from Hiram Garcia that has been in the works for the last 5 years has a lot of potential to payoff really well with the rich-story world setting of a Christmas movie paired with an action-adventure setting.

Miracle on 34th Street is a classic Christmas movie that has been celebrated for ages and I remember seeing the film multiple times during my childhood along with its 1994 remake and seeing it serve as inspiration for an action epic is certainly intriguing. “Red One” might just go the route of setting the story during Christmas time with a goal of making the story family-friendly or they may go even further than that and involve the character of Santa Claus as possibly a main character. Perhaps the Rock will have to team up with Santa Claus in some crazy hijinks or his character will have to save Santa Claus after he is kidnapped by terrorists, or perhaps Santa Claus will serve as some sort of sincere emotional mentor to the Rock if they decide to tell a more grounded story along the lines of Miracle on 34th Street with action scenes when the story calls for it in between holiday family moments with the Rock’s character and his potential onscreen family throughout the course of the adventure.

Who knows what will happen, I just know that I can’t wait to see what the Rock cooks up with Fast Five scribe Chris Morgan and Seven Bucks Productions. “Red One” will film in 2022 for a holiday 2023 release on Amazon. Till then The Rock’s next movie will be Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” later this month, the big-budget Netflix movie “Red Notice”, to be released later this year, and of course, “Black Adam” next summer as the Rock is about to change the hierarchy of power within the DC Universe.
